Ridding Yourself of Unhealthy Habits

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 - 10:30 PM - Day 10 of new blog

My cognitive abilities are fading at this moment due to a very full day at work and on-call responsibilities.

So today, instead of a personal challenge to share, I'll share a metaphor I've been using in my therapy sessions:

Don't deal with unhealthy behaviors, whether it's in thinking, speaking or doing, by trying to stop the behavior ... or get rid of it ... or change your "bad habit".
Most often, even if you succeed, it will only be temporary:(

Instead, imagine you have a jar filled with tainted water. You also have many smooth stones, each one representing positive thoughts, positive words, positive deeds that you naturally engage in.
Simply drop each stone into the tainted water. As the positivity builds up the impure water will naturally just spill out of the jar. This is the way to permanenty rid yourself of unhealthy habits.

Have a good night everyone.

Marilyn
